Okinawa Prefecture in Japan was selected for The New York Times' "52 Places to Go in 2026" list, which was released earlier this year. Okinawa, Japan's southernmost prefecture, consists of 160 islands, about 50 of which are inhabited. Among them, Miyako Island–the fourth-largest in terms of area–is famous for its silky, white-sand beaches. One of these, Yonaha Maehama Beach, a pristine 7-kilometer stretch of shoreline, is ranked among the best beaches in Japan. Known as "Miyako Blue," it sits amidst azure ocean waters, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. But Miyako Island's appeal isn't limited to sand and sea. In addition to numerous scenic spots and the unique flora and fauna, the island offers a wealth of experiences, including its distinctive Ryukyuan culture such as traditional cuisine, music & dance and Miyako Jofu, a native woven fabric designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. With direct flights available from Tokyo and Osaka, Miyako Island–often called a paradise on earth–is very easy to reach. Consider Miyako Island on your next trip to Japan.

MIYAKOJIMA TOKYU HOTEL & RESORTS
|
Looking to be rejuvenated by refreshing breezes and white-powder beaches?
Our hotel boasts a prime location overlooking Yonaha Maehama Beach–often hailed among the finest in the Orient–and is just a 10-minute drive from Miyako Airport (a shuttle service is available via advance reservation). The moment you pass through the hotel gate, the atmosphere changes. You slip into a world defined by tropical gardens, white stone buildings constructed from local "Ryukyu limestone, " lamps shaped like island shells lining the pathways, and ornaments of Ryukyu glass throughout. All 247 guest rooms feature balconies allowing you to relax quietly while feeling and breathing the ocean air. Take part in marine activities such as kayaking, SUP, and banana boat rides, or simply unwind poolside. Dining experiences emphasize local ingredients, especially authentic Okinawan cuisine, Miyako Soba noodles, and the hotel-exclusive Awamori liquor. In the evening, chill out at Bar "Moonshell," where a 7,000-piece shell chandelier enhances the tropical ambiance. THE ISLAND SPA eurelia offers treatments with natural island ingredients, based on the concept of Okinawan wisdom–distinct from Asian or European spa traditions. For entertainment, the hotel's in-house taiko drum team, Shinkanucha, performs live shows*. Through Eisa drumming and sanshin performances–traditional arts of Okinawa's Miyako Island–our hotel creates a memorable island experience, with participatory night events, where guests can join one another and the staff in both song and dance. As a coral reef paradise, Miyako Island is a place that introduces guests to a new side of Japan's charm.
*Performances are held on an irregular basis, so please check the schedule in advance.
