TOKYU HOTELS
TOKYU HOTELS Joins the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC)
TOKYU HOTELS has joined the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), an international non-profit organization that establishes and manages sustainability standards worldwide. It is the first domestic hotel chain in Japan to have all of its properties join the GSTC.
On February 17, 2026, TOKYU HOTELS became the first Japanese hotel chain to have all of its properties join the Global Sustainable Tourism Council® (GSTC), an international non-profit organization established in 2007 that manages the GSTC Standards - the global standards for sustainable travel and tourism- and provides international accreditation for sustainable tourism Certification Bodies.
The tourism industry is transitioning to a stage where more comprehensive sustainability is required. This includes not only reduced environmental impact, but also strong relationships with local communities, consideration for human rights and working conditions, and transparent governance. TOKYU HOTELS recognizes this shift and believes it is crucial to learn from international standards and best practices to enhance the quality of our hotel management. Joining GSTC is a first step for us, as we review and develop our initiatives within an international framework and monitor the latest discussions and insights on sustainable tourism.
TOKYU HOTELS has been proactively advancing its sustainability initiatives across its hotel chain and individual properties for several years. In 2019, the company established its Sustainability Policy, guided by the vision of being “a hotel brand that cares for the planet, communities, and people.” In 2022, under this policy, the company introduced the Sustainable Action Plan 2022 as a set of concrete guidelines to realize a sustainable society.
Guided by the GSTC Standards, TOKYU HOTELS will progressively advance initiatives within our company to enhance understanding, develop talent, and visualize and elevate efforts at each of our hotels. In addition, through collaboration with local communities, municipalities, and partners, we will help improve the sustainability of Japan's tourism industry as a whole. We will also steadily advance initiatives toward realizing sustainable tourism through hotel operations that are closely integrated with local communities.
TOKYU HOTELS will leverage its membership in GSTC to further deepen its sustainable initiatives underway across its hotel chain and individual properties and align them with internationally recognized standards for sustainable tourism. This will enhance TOKYU HOTELS’ brand value and strengthen its position as a brand of choice. In addition, as a member of GSTC, the company will actively encourage and support the acquisition of sustainability certifications at its properties.
Comment from Mr. Randy Durband
"GSTC warmly welcomes Tokyu Hotels & Resorts as a GSTC member organization. We appreciate their efforts to improve their sustainability, and we are proud to do what we can to support those good efforts."
Comment from Mr. Takashi Takei
"We feel a great responsibility as the first Japanese hotel chain to have all of its properties join the GSTC. This is not a demonstration of what we have already done, but a declaration of our commitment to continually improve ourselves in accordance with international standards and diverse values. We will earnestly seek to fulfil our role as a hotel operator to ensure Japanese tourism continues to be trusted and chosen by the world."
About GSTC
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council® (GSTC®) establishes and manages global sustainable standards, the GSTC Standards, also known as the GSTC Criteria. The GSTC Destination Standard for public policymakers and destination managers, the GSTC Hotel Standard for hotels and accommodations, the GSTC Tour Operator Standard, the GSTC MICE Standard for Venues, Event Organizers, and Events & Exhibitions, and the GSTC Attraction Standard for tourist attractions such as theme parks, museums, and national parks. These are the guiding principles and minimum requirements that any tourism business or destination should aspire to reach in order to protect and sustain the world’s natural and cultural resources while ensuring tourism meets its potential as a tool for conservation and poverty alleviation.
The GSTC Standards form the foundation for GSTC’s assurance role for Certification Bodies that certify hotels/accommodations, tour operators, and destinations as having sustainable policies and practices in place. GSTC does not directly certify any products or services but provides accreditation to those that do.
GSTC is an independent and neutral USA-registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that represents a diverse and global membership, including national and provincial governments, leading travel companies, hotels, tour operators, NGOs, individuals and communities – all striving to achieve best practices in sustainable tourism. The GSTC is an ISEAL Community Member, a global membership organization for ambitious, collaborative, and transparent sustainability systems, as well as an Association Member of The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and an Associate Member with the Inter-American Accreditation Cooperation (IAAC).
