MIYAKOJIMA IN OKINAWA PREFECTURE
Paradise Islands with the Most Beautiful Beaches in Japan
Okinawa Prefecture is the southernmost prefecture in Japan, consisting of 160 islands, of which approximately 50 are inhabited. The prefectural capital is Naha on Okinawa Honto, the main island, where approximately 90% of the prefectural population resides. The majority of the prefecture lies within the subtropical zone, boasting pristine oceans, fine-sand beaches, and a treasure trove of rare animals secluded amongst lush greenery. Direct flights from Tokyo and Osaka primarily arrive into Naha City on Okinawa Honto, though direct flights to Miyakojima and Ishigakijima are also available. Each island has its own unique landscape and culture, making island hopping a delightful way to explore the prefecture. Miyakojima, for example, is famous for its beaches, three of which are ranked in the top 10 of TripAdvisor's "Travelers' Choice Best Beaches in Japan." One of these, "Yonaha Maehama Beach," was named the best beach in Japan for three consecutive years by the ranking. Its surrounding azure ocean waters, are known as "Miyako Blue," because they are so breathtakingly beautiful and an ideal spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. Additionally, the island is rich in cultural heritage, with "Miyako Jofu," being a traditional woven fabric made from ramie fibers, designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan.
