Yokohama, the second largest city in Japan, lies on Tokyo Bay, just south of Tokyo. Yokohama opened its port in 1859 as one of the first cities to trade with Western countries following the end of Japan's national isolation policy. Since then, it has rapidly developed into an international port city and is now one of Japan's major ports. Yokohama is beloved by many Japanese because of its unique atmosphere - wide thoroughfares, Japan's largest Chinatown and Western-style buildings in the Motomachi region - the former foreign settlement district. Yokohama Station provides very convenient access to major areas of Tokyo. It's just 17 minutes to Shinagawa Station by JR Lines and about 30 minutes to Shibuya Station by Tokyu Toyoko Line.
